Growing up, I never considered myself artistic. My art teachers didn’t see much artistic promise in me and were rarely, if ever, encouraging. I am not even sure they knew my name. If I’m honest with myself, I think I thought of art as frivolous - something that was messy and took up a lot of time, expense and energy.
Over time, I started realizing that being artistic could look a lot of different ways. I took advantage of a few painting workshops and took a stab at a few ideas of my own.
Through these experiences, combined with the emphasis on artistic expression at our church, I realized we are ALL artists. It’s beautiful to express ourselves and interpret what we see in our world through our art, writing or photography. After all, if God is Creator and we are created is His image, doesn’t that give us license to create as well?
Furthermore, it taps into a part of our brain that the everyday and mundane chores and routines of life cannot activate. In a world where screens are king and social media tries to seduce us daily, I encourage you to try something artistic.
I find when I create that a part of me usually dormant comes to life. It’s like I’m tapping into something deep that can only be reached through creating. Creating is healthy, it is invigorating and it’s unique to us as humans since we are made in His image. Go ahead - get your hands dirty and see where it takes you.
