ABOUT US

We are Elizabeth & John, parents of three wonderfully unique teenagers.

We started Social Media Can Wait after experiencing success in delaying social media for our middle schoolers alongside other families.  After seeing the positive impact on our kids, we decided to create a template so other groups could do the same.  Our group’s positive outcome has inspired many similar groups in our community and beyond.

The data is clear - the overuse of screens in our society has negative effects on our children.  In addition to the obvious harmful content and comparison, excessive time on devices is hindering this generation’s ability to make decisions, resolve conflict, and form meaningful relationships. In short, it is keeping many young people in adolescence longer because they lack the confidence and skills to successfully advance into adulthood.

But the tide is turning and there is great hope as parents are coming together to forge a better future for their kids.  Protecting your kids is possible…if families band together.

Our Mission

Social Media Can Wait is about peer groups delaying access to social media – TOGETHER – until THE mid-teen years.

Why is it so important to delay social media during adolescence?

The growth and changes experienced during the tween and early teen years are second only to that experienced between birth and 18 months. Because of all these changes, this cohort craves stability, genuine relationships and real, old-fashioned down time.

Social media not only doesn’t fit into this equation, but it shatters confidence and can change the adolescent brain – for the worse.

Social Media Can Wait exists to help families band together so that tweens and young teens can delay social media and experience a life full of real connections and relationships.
