STEPS TO STARTING YOUR SMCW GROUP

1

Build your core group of 5-10 families within your child’s friend group and decide what your goals are. Some examples: no social media through middle school; no smart phones through middle school; or no social media until age 16.

2

Once you have a core group, plan a larger meeting inviting 20 or more families in your child's grade/peer group. The more families, the higher the chance for success.

3

In the larger meeting, explain SMCW's mission and perhaps bring in a speaker or host a panel. Here are some ideas for hosting a teen panel, hosting a parent panel as well as tips for hosting a successful meeting.

4

Close the meeting by recapping key points. You can ask parents for a smart phone and/or social media commitment in person or you could send out a Google survey afterwards.

5

Decide on a way for parents to communicate (email, Facebook page or the like) and send out occasional updates, perhaps with related articles.

6

Meet regularly - every 6 months or perhaps more frequently.
